If you have Freight of Any Kind (FAK) contracts with your LTL carriers, you can utilize Turvo’s FAK grouping feature to assign freight classes to a normalized FAK freight class that can be assigned to your carriers. This will allow Turvo to consider FAK contracts when calculating rates for LTL shipments and provide more accurate shipment rating.
This article covers:
Creating FAK groups
Important Note: FAKs on the contract and lane level apply only to LTL SMC3 contracts.
Contract FAKs apply an FAK to only that particular contract and this might be different contracts with the same carrier for different customers. Lane FAKs apply an FAK to a particular lane and certain lanes in a contract can have different FAK’s.
There are 18 different classes of FAKs that LTL freight can ship under: 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 77.5, 85, 92.5, 100, 110, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 300, 400, and 500. The higher the class, the higher the rate for every hundred pounds you ship.
Enable FAKs on the Contract
To enable FAKs on the contract, navigate to Accounts > Contracts > select the contract > FAKs and toggle ON Enable FAK group. Add the Lower class, Upper Class, and FAK to their respective fields. Once toggled ON, Turvo uses the FAK group for rating and booking.
You can also create FAK ranges. For example, freight classes 50 - 77.5 are classified as FAK 55.
Enable FAKs on the Lane
To enable FAKs on the lane, navigate to the contract, click the Lane Rates tab, select the lane rate or create a new one, and toggle on Enable FAK groups. Once toggled ON, you can define the Lower class, Upper class, and FAK. FAKs that are defined on a lane take precedence over FAKs defined at the contract level.
Assign freight classes to items in LTL shipments
The individual freight classes of each item type in your LTL shipment will need to be provided for Turvo to know which FAK group applies to the shipment for rating. The Freight class field can be filled in for items in your LTL shipments while creating a new shipment or while updating an existing shipment.
Adding items while creating LTL shipments
The items’ LTL freight class can be added while creating a new LTL shipment in the Create shipment modal. Where the field appears depends on the version of LTL creation workflow enabled for your tenant. See our article, How to create an LTL shipment, to learn more about adding item details while creating a new LTL shipment from either version of the LTL shipment creation workflow.
Updating items in an existing LTL shipment
In an LTL existing shipment, navigate to the Details tab > Customers block > Items section. Use the Freight class drop-down in each item to assign a freight class. Always click SAVE at the bottom of the section to save your changes.
See our article, Managing advanced shipment details, to learn more about updating existing shipments.
Retrieving rates with FAK groups applied
Once FAK groups are created and associated with a carrier, and you are ready to rate an LTL shipment with freight classes applied to the items within, Turvo will apply the FAK group’s normalized freight class when calling your LTL rating integration(s) to retrieve rates for your shipments. The rates you receive will accurately reflect the carrier’s price for LTL shipments for the normalized freight class.
While in the Carriers tab of an LTL shipment, if a carrier with FAK groups applied is available for the shipment, the name of the FAK group displays beneath the price, as shown below.
Note: Turvo utilizes LTL rating platform integrations to retrieve rates for LTL shipments. If the carrier has not been configured for the LTL rating platform, it will not appear in the results shown in the Carriers tab. See our article, LTL Shipment Guide, to learn more about Turvo’s LTL rating platform integrations, LTL shipments, and assigning carriers to them.
